Life of Pi: Movie Analysis

Title: Life of Pi
Genre: Fantasy Fiction
Characters:  Pi Patel - main character
                      Richard Parker - tiger
Setting: In the beginning, the movie was set in India on the 21st Century. As the movie goes and was retold, it was set on the sea in the year 1970's.
Plot: On the first part of the story, the adult Pi, or Piscine, recalled his childhood. He was named after a swimming pool somewhere in France. His father owns a zoo, where he also learns all things about animals.
As he grew older, he entered 3 different religions, there was Hindu, then Christianity and Islam. Then, his family decides to sell the zoo, and sold the animals to other zoos before they reach Canada.

Then, the family embarks on a boat together with some of the animals. After a few days, they met a storm which led to the sinking of the ship and his family's death. Pi was save and was on the lifeboat together with the hyena, the zebra and the orangutan. But, unfortunately, the hyena killed the zebra and the orangutan and there he discovered that the tiger was riding under the tarpaulin and ate the hyena.

After a few days of sailing, Pi discovered many things and one of which is the carnivorous island with meerkats on it. After so many days of surviving in the sea, the lifeboat came to an island where Richard Parker disappeared on a nearby jungle.

At the nearby end of the story, there were two men that asked questions about the incident. At first they didn't believe, so he retold the story and change it to a story where there are no animals and things. After the story, they thanked Pi and left.

So in the end, it was concluded that the orangutan was his mother and the zebra was the sailor, and the two of them was killed by the cook which is represented by the hyena. Then Richard Parker was Pi, himself.

Theme: It somewhat talks about life and the struggles that we may experience. And it also talk on the faith with God.

Symbolism: The carnivorous island, in the movie, symbolizes life. It means that we can't always experience happiness in life, there would be a time that we'll encounter different kinds of problems. Faith in God is what we just need.

1. What does the title mean in relation to the film as a whole?

The Life of Pi, as what the title says, talks about the story of Pi as he goes to an adventure in the sea since he was trying to save himself from the sinking of the ship.

2. Among the characters, to whom can you relate to?

Maybe I can relate to Pi, because after all the struggles he'd been true he still had the faith. Although there are times that he doubted, still, he put his faith back to God. Just like me, I  also encountered different problems, problems at school, family or friends. And because of that, there are times that I doubted our Lord, which is wrong. But in the end, I erased those doubts and replace it with faith. And I thanked my co-YFCs for their help in strengthening my faith.

3. Which part of the presentation struck you most? Why?

It is the part where Richard Parker was getting weaker and Pi was crying while he let the tiger's head rest in his lap. I was really touched because it shows that  even though there are times that the tiger wants to kill him, still he's there to love and care for him.

4. What is the movie's message?

For me, the message of the movie was that, in life we will not always be filled with the good ones, there would always be an accompaniment of struggles and difficulties that will surely help us realize the true meaning of life.

5. Did I like this in general? Why?

Yes, other than it is a touching movie, it is also like a sumptuous meal, filled with lessons that will help us in our everyday life. It teaches us to be hopeful and patient. It also teaches us to strengthen our faith with the Lord, because in the end, for sure, we would get something great in return.

6. Did I agree with the main theme/purpose? Why or Why not?

Yes, I truly agree. In life we would also be experiencing some unfortunate things, struggles, problems, pains and sufferings and we can't avoid it. But we can do something to stop it, by not losing hope and having a strong faith.

7. What specifically did I like/dislike? Why?

I don't have something to dislike in the movie, everything in it was so amazing. To be more specific, I like the way the story had been said/recalled by the adult Pi. It's not confusing, unlike with the other movies. Everything was clear.

8. Are there any aspects of theme which are left ambiguous at the end? Why?

I think none, because in the end, everything was  still connected. There are no things which may contradict some part of the story.

9. How does this film relate to the things that are happening in your life?

It really helped me a lot. As what I have said on my previous answers, every time we encounter challenges in life and we're alone, always remember that we always have a God where we can ask for help. Never doubt on his strength and power.
